High-Spectral- and High-Temporal-Resolution Infrared Measurements from Geostationary Orbit

چکیده
The first of the next-generation series of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) is scheduled for launch in 2015. The new series of GOES will not have an infrared (IR) sounder dedicated to acquiring high-vertical-resolution atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. High-spectral-resolution sensors have a much greater vertical-resolving power of temperature, moisture, and trace gases than lowspectral-resolution sensors. Because of coarse vertical resolution and limited accuracy in the legacy sounding products from the current GOES sounders, placing a high-spectral-resolution IR sounder with high temporal resolution in the geostationary orbit can provide nearly time-continuous three-dimensional moisture and wind profiles. This would allow substantial improvements in monitoring the mesoscale environment for severe weather forecasting and other applications. Application areas include nowcasting (and short-term forecasts) and numerical weather prediction, which require products such as atmospheric moisture and temperature profiles as well as derived parameters, clear-sky radiances, vertical profiles of atmospheric motion vectors, sea surface temperature, cloud-top properties, and surface properties. Other application areas include trace gases/air quality, dust detection and characterization, climate, and calibration. This paper provides new analysis that further documents the available information regarding the anticipated improvements and their benefits.

Analysis of updraft velocity in mesoscale convective systems using satellite and WRF model simulations
Updraft vertical velocity is an important dynamical quantity which is strongly related to storm intensity and heavy precipitation. It can be calculated by direct observations, NWP model, and geostationary satellites which can provide the possibility of measuring this quantity with high temporal resolution. This research analyzed updraft velocity based on six derived parameters from INSAT3-D and...
متن کاملDetermination of Tropical Radiation Budget at High Time and Space Resolution by Combination of Geostationary and Polar Satellite Measurements
ERB(Earth Radiation Budget) data describe how the earth gains en-gergy, due to absorbed solar radiation ux, or looses energy, due to emitted thermal radiation ux. Since the atmospheric energetics is described by diierential equations with derivatives in space and in time, high resolution spatial and temporal ERB data should be available. ERB data derived from satellite measurements exist (ERBE(...

Geostationary meteorological satellite infrared (IR) channel data contain important spectral information for meteorological research and applications, but their spatial resolution is relatively low. The objective of this study is to obtain higher-resolution IR images. One common method of increasing resolution fuses the IR data with high-resolution visible (VIS) channel data. However, most exis...
متن کاملKalman filter physical retrieval of surface emissivity and temperature from geostationary infrared radiances
The high temporal resolution of data acquisition by geostationary satellites and their capability to resolve the diurnal cycle allows for the retrieval of a valuable source of information about geophysical parameters. In this paper, we implement a Kalman filter approach to apply temporal constraints on the retrieval of surface emissivity and temperature from radiance measurements made from geos...
